CHANGE OF PLANS‼️ - We Left The Airstream Behind...

In this episode we leave everything behind. We lock up the Airstream, load up the car and head out of town. It’s been a crazy year so far, so come along us as we finally break away for some new travel adventures in retirement. We explore the real Athens Greece, both the ancient and modern. We also share our tips on things to see and do and the best way to get around this beautiful city.

The REAL Athens

Athens is basically one giant outdoor museum, and the best way to explore this city is on foot. I know, it’s not exactly groundbreaking advice…but trust me…walking through ancient ruins while dodging stray cats is half the fun.

Buses are a cheap option, but trying to figure out the route and schedule might just cost you your sanity. Taxis are another option when you're feeling fancy or just plain lazy.

The metro, on the other hand, is a game-changer. It's clean, fast, and doesn’t require a degree in Greek to figure out. We ended up doing a mix of walking, taxis and the metro. It was like a real-life version of ‘The Amazing Race’ but without the stressful parts.

One of the best ways to explore a new city is to learn the public transportation system. Bonus Tip: You'll save a lot of money as well

Must See 👀 Sights

The Acropolis

Topping the list of must see sights in Athens is the Acropolis. It’s Athens' version of the Eiffel Tower, but with way more history and less tourists... okay, maybe not less tourists.

The ancient Acropolis towers over the city of Athens.

The Parthenon is the star of the show - a temple so fancy, even Athena herself would've been jealous of the views. Other significant monuments include, the gateway to the Acropolis, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the theater of Dionysius.

If you're planning on auditioning for a Greek tragedy, now's your chance. Just remember, the summer heat can be brutal and will creep up on you faster than you can say "Mount Olympus!” So drink plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes and consider investing in a personal fan.

Sitting atop the Acropolis, the Parthenon can be see from anywhere in Athens

Ancient Algora

The Ancient Agora was the Greeks version of an Ancient Amazon. Okay, maybe not quite as convenient, but this place was the original one-stop shop. Everything from groceries, to gossip, and government services all in one spot. Imagine trying to buy a loaf of bread and accidentally overhearing Socrates drop some knowledge bombs.

Today, you can still shop 'til you drop (or at least until your feet hurt), but instead of fresh produce, you'll find touristy trinkets. It’s like time travel, but without the toga parties and more overpriced souvenirs. It’s definitely worth a visit….just to walk the step of ancient philosophers while shopping for questionable souvenir.

Modern Athens

Athens is like that cool friend who's super old but somehow always knows the latest Tik Tok trends. It's a city where ancient ruins share the spotlight with trendy cafes. One place that perfectly captures this mix is Syntagma Square. It's basically the Greek version of Times Square, just smaller and not as flashy. Here, visitors can watch the ceremonial changing of the guards.

Picture this: a bunch of guys in skirts with fluffy shoes marching around like they own the place. It's equal parts hilarious and impressive. Just don't blink or you might miss their perfectly synchronized dance moves.

The changing of the guards occurs every hour. A ceremony not to be missed.

Plaka Neighborhood

Just a short walk away is the enchanting Plaka neighborhood. Its winding streets lined with colorful shops provides a charming village atmosphere. With hidden courtyards, tiny cafes, and family-run taverns, Plaka still retains its local charm. Don't miss wandering its beautiful streets and soaking up the atmosphere of this historic neighborhood.

Athens Food Scene

The Athens' food scene offers a delicious blend of traditional and modern tastes. Alongside Greek classics, Athens boasts a variety of trendy cafes, gourmet restaurants, and family owned restaurants showcasing modern Greek cuisine.

One of our favorites cafes was Gaia, an authentic Greek cafe and deli. The atmosphere was relaxed and the food was delicious. Just make sure you’re not in a hurry as every dish is made fresh to order. So sit back, relax and enjoy a great meal with friends.

Make sure to try the local Greek cuisine while in Athens...It won't disappoint!

Athens Beach Get-Away

Okay, so you've had your fill of ancient gods and crumbling columns. It's time to trade in your walking shoes for flip-flops and hit the beach! For those seeking a beach escape there are a variety of Beach Clubs and public beach’s in Athens.

We spent a restful day soaking up the sun and enjoying some lite snacks and drinks. The water was crystal clear, and the overall vibe was pure bliss. Plus, getting there was a breeze. We just hopped on a tram and let the city's traffic be someone else's problem.

A day at the beach is a great way to relax while visiting Athens.

Final Thoughts
