Forget Ordinary! This Is NOT a Textbook Camping Trip!

Updated: Apr 12

Fuel up the truck and hitch up the Airstream, today we hit the road and head North to kick off the camping season…but with a twist!   A journey that combines some fascinating American history with some relaxing beach time.  This isn’t your textbook camping trip, but an adventure all the same.

We decided to stay at a familiar campground and were fortunate to be able to stay for a week at the Sea Mist RV Park located at the Dam Neck Navy Annex.  This was our second trip to this campground and it once again did not disappoint.

Sea Mist RV Park:

To stay at this campground you will need to be either active duty or retired military with base access.  If that’s not an issue, them Sea Mist campground should be on your list of Must See military campground destinations.

Exploring Big Whiskey:

Our adventure began with a tour of the mighty USS Wisconsin (aka Big Whiskey). This incredible battleship served our country for decades and stepping on board is like stepping into a bygone era. It was great to explore its decks and learn about its role in major military conflicts.  This impressive ship, a massive Iowa-class battleship that left its mark on American history, served in World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm. Touring the USS Wisconsin is like stepping onto a piece of that history, offering a glimpse into what life was like aboard a powerful battleship.

A day trip to the USS Wisconsin is well worth it.

The Luck Of The Irish:

After spending the morning learning about Naval history, we walked a few blocks over to Grace O'Malley's Irish Pub in downtown Norfolk. This authentic pub provided the perfect setting with its dark wood interior, handcrafted furnishings, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Their menu boasts traditional Irish fare like shepherd's pie alongside refreshing beers and a selection of whiskeys. They offer Live music to add to the lively ambiance making Grace O'Malley's the perfect spot for a casual pint, a hearty meal, and a touch of Irish charm.

A Relaxing Trip To The Beach:

But of course, no trip to the coast is complete without some beach time!  We have always enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach.   The Navy Gateway Sea Mist campground located on the Dam Neck Navy Annex where we stayed has easy access to the beach and is a great place to enjoy soaking up the sun on the beautiful Atlantic shore.  Sparkling water, soft sand, and crashing waves - the perfect way to unwind after long day.

The Birth Of A Colony:

The next day we continued our exploration and journey through America's colonial past with a visit at the Jamestown Settlement. This living history museum provided a great experience, transporting us back to the 17th century, where we could walk through recreated dwellings and meet historical interpreters that brought the struggles and triumphs of early colonists to life.  We really enjoy these types of living museums much more than the traditional dusty old style museums.

Classic Southern Hospitality:

As much as we enjoy learning about the history of a local area, we equally enjoy finding a hidden gem cafe or restaurant and trying the local fare.  The Old Chickahominy House restaurant is just such a place.  Steeped in Southern hospitality and rich history, the Old Chickahominy House in Williamsburg, VA is a must-visit for any traveler seeking a taste of tradition. This local favorite, established in 1955, boasts down-home Southern cooking in a charming atmosphere. Their menu revolves around comforting classics: think fluffy buttermilk biscuits, savory Virginia country ham, and delicious Brunswick stew. But beyond the food, the Old Chickahominy House offers a unique experience. Dine in a historic house, browse their gift shop filled with treasures, and catch a glimpse of their resident cats!

America's History Triangle:

On a previous trip to the area we had the opportunity to visit Colonial Williamsburg.  On this trip we finally completed the American History Triangle Tour (Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown) with the final stop at the Yorktown Battlefield and American Revolution History Museum.  If you are a military history buffs you will not be disappointed with a visit to the Yorktown area. Here you can learn about a pivotal Revolutionary War battle and how the fight for independence took a dramatic change in favor of the Continental Army.  We were able to walk through a recreated Army camp, learn of the Soldiers struggles during the war, and experience life on an 18th century farm.  A day well spent.

Historic Adventures With A Twist:

This trip along the Virginia coast is just a taste of what's out there.  Follow along for more travel stories and photos in the coming weeks, and get inspired to plan your own history and relaxation escape!  We'd love to hear your travel recommendations in the comments below – what hidden gems have you discovered?
