Old Trucks: Workhorse or Clunker?

When it comes to buying a truck, the allure of a shiny new model is undeniable. However, there's a strong case to be made for keeping your older reliable used truck. Not only can it save you money, but it might also offer advantages you didn't expect. Let's explore why keeping your older truck might just be the best option...for now.

5 Benefits of Keeping Your Older Truck

One thing we hate, is spending our hard earned money on something that isn't really needed. Now we like the idea of a fully loaded new truck as much as the next guy or gal, but not at the expense of my bank account. Below are five benefits of keeping your current truck just a little or a lot longer.

1. No Payments: The Freedom of Ownership

One of the most appealing aspects of owning a reliable older truck is having it paid off. They say, “the best truck is a paid off truck”.  New trucks are ridiculously expensive 💰. With no monthly payments draining our budget, it provides us with a significant financial boost and a sense of freedom. The money we are saving on truck payments, provides us with more disposable income that we can use to travel.  Win - Win.

2. Cheaper to Repair: Less Stress on Your Wallet

Our truck is a 2010 GMC Sierra 2500HD, with a 6.0 liter gas engine.  With older trucks, they tend to be simpler machines with fewer electronic components. This means fewer potential points of failure and, consequently, lower repair costs. While breakdowns can happen with any vehicle, the overall cost of owning a well maintained older truck is often less burdensome than that of a new one. Plus, there's a wealth of aftermarket parts available for older models, which can save you even more money.

The dreaded "Check Engine" light is more common as trucks age.

3. Less Complex: Simplicity is Key

The complexity of modern trucks can be intimidating. With older trucks, you're less likely to be overwhelmed by a dashboard full of confusing features. The basics are often all you need, and older trucks excel in this area. They're easier to understand, maintain, and repair.

4. Upgradable: Customize Your Ride

Older trucks offer a unique opportunity for customization. With a lower initial investment, you can allocate more funds towards upgrades. Whether it's a lift kit, new tires, or a powerful sound system, you can transform your used truck into the perfect vehicle for your needs and style. You may not have all the latest features, but you won't have that big monthly truck payment 💲 either.

You can easily customize your older truck to meet your needs.

5. Comfortable and Familiar: A Truck You Know

If you've been driving a particular truck model (i.e GMC) for years, you're already familiar with its many quirks and strengths. Upgrading to a newer used version of that brand can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity. You'll know what you can expect, and can hit the ground running without a steep learning curve.

While new trucks have their appeal, used trucks offer a compelling alternative. By considering factors like cost, simplicity, and customization, you might find that a pre-owned truck is the perfect fit for your lifestyle and budget. Do you own a used truck? What do you love about it?

When Should You Upgrade Your Truck?

Is your trusty older truck starting to show its age? While it might be tough to say goodbye to a reliable workhorse, there are a few signs that it might be time to consider a new model.

1. Outgrowing Your Truck

If your hauling or towing needs have increased, your current truck might be struggling to keep up. Whether you're hauling larger loads for work or towing a bigger camper, a new truck with increased capacity can make a significant difference in your everyday life.

2. Repair Costs are Out of Control

As trucks age, repair costs tend to rise. If you’re spending more on repairs than the truck is worth, it might be time to invest in a newer model. Modern trucks are built to last longer and require less maintenance, saving you money in the long run.

3. Safety Concerns & Peace of Mind

Your safety should always be a top priority. If your truck is becoming unreliable or showing signs of wear and tear that compromise its safety, it's time for an upgrade. Newer trucks come equipped with advanced safety features that can help prevent accidents and protect you on the road. Once you lose confidence in the safety and reliablity of your older truck, an new truck may be the only way to regain some peace of mind.

There are a lot of new truck options for every budget.

A Few Final Thoughts

Our current truck has been a loyal companion for the past 14 years, and with relatively low mileage (88,000 miles), we anticipate many more years of service. While there's no guarantee of continued reliability, we're happy to stick with what works for now. We'll continue to monitor its performance and consider upgrading when the time is right. What are your thoughts on new vs. older trucks?
