The High Price of Airstreams: What Drives the Cost?

As Airstream owners, we are frequently asked, "Why are Airstreams so expensive?" Admittedly, we’ve pondered this question ourselves, especially when we were shopping for our current travel trailer.

Are Airstreams too expensive or a great value?

Over time, we’ve come to understand that the answer isn't simple and straight-forward. But, that the cost reflects the unique qualities (tangible and intangible) of Airstream travel trailers. Here’s a breakdown of why we think Airstream travel trailers command such a premium price. Let us know if we’ve hit the mark 🎯 or missed it entirely.

5 Reasons: Why Airstreams Cost More

Reason 1: Material and Construction

  • Aluminum body: Unlike many RVs made with fiberglass or composite materials, Airstreams are crafted from aluminum, a durable and lightweight material.  This material ensures that Airstreams can last for many years, making them a valuable investment for those who enjoy the RV lifestyle.

  • Handcrafted construction: A significant portion of the build process involves manual labor, requiring skilled craftsmen. Each travel trailer requires several thousand rivets during construction. This time consuming process and attention to detail contributes to high labor cost and an increase in the overall price.

Reason 2: Iconic Design and Brand Recognition

  • Airstream's legacy: The brand has a rich history and a loyal following, making it a desirable choice for many. This strong brand recognition allows them to command a premium price.  Like Harley Davidson and Mercedes-Benz, Airstream's brand recognition helps to pull the price higher.

  • Timeless design: The classic Airstream look has endured for decades, appealing to a wide range of consumers. There is nothing else on the road with the same timeless design as Airstream. Just like a hand crafted Rolex, Airstreams have a design that is unmistakable and helps to drive up buyer demand.

Reason 3: Resale Value

  • Investment: Most will tell you that an RV purchase is NOT an investment in the traditional sense of building wealth. However, a well maintained Airstream will often hold it's value much better than a traditional RV, making it a potentially a good investment in a life well traveled. Because there is such a high demand for Airstreams (new & used) this can directly influence the purchase price.

  • Limited Supply: When demand for Airstreams outpaces production, it can create a scarcity that drives up prices. This is basic economics 101 (Supply vs Demand). This is particularly true for popular models or limited-edition versions such as the Base Camp REI edition.

Reason 4: Features and Amenities

  • Luxury appointments: Many Airstream models come equipped with high-end features and amenities, contributing to the overall cost. The Airstream Classic and new Trade Wind are two examples of Airstream trailers with luxury amenities (Classic) or off-grid features (Trade Wind) that buyers are looking for.

  • Customization: Many potential Airstream buyers choose to customize their trailers, which can significantly increase the price. Adding on additional features and amenities, such as the full awning package, at the time of purchase will naturally increase the overall cost. In our opinion, some features and amenities are worth the upgrade and others are not.

Reason 5: Manufacturing Process

  • Limited production: Airstream takes a more deliberate approach to manufacturing compared to many other RV brands. Let's face it, Airstream travel trailers are a niche product that doesn't fit the broader RV market.

  • External Factors:  The cost of labor involved in manufacturing and the cost of materials used in construction directly influence the final price of an Airstream. External factors like supply & demand, vendor availability, and economic factors, can affect these costs, ultimately impacting the price that consumers pay.

Our Final Thoughts:

While Airstream trailers are undoubtedly a significant purchase, many owners argue that the quality, durability, and iconic status of the brand justify the higher price. Ultimately, the decision to purchase an Airstream comes down to personal preference and budget. Good summary. The resale makes it a safer purchase than other RVs. You can usually get most of your cost back when you sell it.
