Top 10: Maintenance Checks Every AIRSTREAM Owner Should Know!

Updated: Mar 27

Owning an Airstream isn't just about having an RV; it's embracing a whole lifestyle of adventure and freedom on the open road. To keep your aluminum beauty rolling smoothly and ensure countless unforgettable memories, mastering some basic maintenance tasks is key.

This blog post will help to equip you with the basic knowledge and confidence to tackle these essentials like a seasoned RV veteran, ensuring your home on wheels stays in tip-top shape.  While this isn’t an all-inclusive list it is a good starting point for new Airstream owners.  That said, always refer to your Owners Manual and consult with a certified Airstream technician as needed.

When we schedule our routine maintenance we like to keep it as easy and simple as possible.  We also like to group it during the year (i.e. Spring & Fall) to ensure we aren’t missing any critical tasks.  That said, here are our Top 10 maintenance tasks that we think every Airstream owner should know and complete on a routine basis to ensure your Airstream is ready for our next adventure.  Since there is no set order or priority to complete these Top 10 tasks, feel free to rearrange as needed.

PRO TIP:  Before getting started, gather all your essential tools, supplies and lubricants needed to complete your maintenance tasks.  Once you have all your RV tools and supplies ready it’s time to jump in.

  • Task 1: Interior Checks & Deep Cleaning: Give your Airstream a good internal spruce-up! Clean those air conditioner filters for optimal airflow, and don't forget to check your smoke detectors, LPG detector, fire extinguisher and clean the fantastic fan – ensuring a fresh and safe environment.

  • Task 2: Tire Checks: Safety first! Regularly inspect your tires for tread depth, uneven wear, and proper lug nut torque. Don't forget to check the spare tire as well!

  • Task 3: Battery Maintenance: A healthy electrical system is crucial. Make sure your batteries are fully charged, and inspect the wires for any damage or corrosion on the terminals.

  • Task 4: Propane Checks: Propane keeps your Airstream cozy. Inspect the hoses for leaks and check the expiry dates on your LPG tanks. Safety should never be an afterthought!

  • Task 5: Electrical System: Similar to your batteries, ensure your electrical system is in good shape. Check the breaker box for tripped breakers and loose fuses. Inspect the power cord and connections for any damage.

  • Task 6: Plumbing System: Nobody wants a leaky situation! Inspect your water lines and connections for any signs of moisture. A quick check can save you a future headache.

  • Task 7: Windows & Seals: Regularly inspect window and door seals for wear and tear. A little TLC goes a long way – use a rubber seal conditioner to keep them supple and prevent leaks.

  • Task 8: Lubrication: A little goes a long way. Lubricate your door hinges, steps, awning, and hitch coupler to ensure smooth operation and prevent future squeaks and groans.  You can check out our favorite Airstream products at our Amazon Storefront.

  • Task 9: Roof Inspection: Your roof is your Airstream's shield against the elements. Get up there (safely!) and inspect for leaks, loose rivets, and damage to the weather seal. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, consider hiring a professional.

  • Task 10: Exterior Body: Take a walk around your Airstream and inspect the exterior body for any signs of damage or corrosion. Catching small issues early can prevent bigger problems down the road.

Conclusion: By incorporating these Top 10 maintenance tasks into your routine, you can ensure your Airstream is always ready for your next adventure. Remember, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way in keeping your Airstream reliable and on the road for years to come.

Happy Camping & Safe Travels!
